SOFA CHICAGO 2008 FAIR WRAP RELEASE
STRONG SALES AND RECORD CROWDS AT SOFA CHICAGO 2008
"A Sweet Spot in the Art Market" —CBS MarketWatch
PDF MS Word
CHICAGO. Long heralded as the nation’s premier fair for outstanding contemporary decorative arts and design, the 15th SOFA CHICAGO staged at historic Navy Pier, November 7-9, 2008, matched the diversity and richness of the work on offer by 100 international dealers, with appreciative crowds of more than 34,000 seasoned and new collectors, scoring brisk sales. As CBS MarketWatch of The Wall Street Journal Digital Network, which includes Barrons Online, reported in its November 20th story, A Sweet Spot in the Art Market, "Fine art auctions have been a tough sell this season, but contemporary decorative pieces sold well at the recent SOFA Chicago Fair.” This story was named one of the Top 10 Personal Finance Daily stories on MarketWatch for the week of Nov. 17-21. SOFA CHICAGO was also featured on You Tube and the venerable Voice of America will feature interviews at the show with glass masters Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra and Lucio Bubacco in the upcoming months on VOAnews.com, translated into 45 languages.

Glass artist Lucio Bubacco creates compelling new artistry coupled with blue chip investment values, and Litvak Gallery is showcasing his latest work in a dynamic installation equal to the most cutting-edge contemporary art museum exhibition.  The Tel Aviv based Litvak Gallery spent a stunning $100,000 alone to stage the extraordinary work by Bubacco, who turns to the centuries old “lume” glass technique while infusing imagery from Greek, Roman and Byzantine antiquities as well as medieval, Renaissance and La Commedia dell’Arte examples in his fascinating surreal glass sculpture.  Internationally recognized art historian, curator and author Dan Klein says, “Bubacco is undoubtedly one of the most gifted flame workers of our time, creating statuary in miniature which is alive with rhythm, movement and emotion.”  In a special lecture on Saturday at 12:30 pm, the London-based Klein will explore the high points of Bubacco’s most recent oeuvre reflecting his mastery, working with Venice’s finest glass blowers as well as the famed enamel painter Laura Santini.

LUCIO BUBACCO AT LITVAK GALLERY,
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL
Denoting the rich sophistication of primo Venetian glass artist Lucio Bubacco, Litvak Gallery dealer is devoting a staggering $100,000 to staging that glass master’s work at SOFA CHICAGO.  “We’ve seen contemporary art dealers and 18th century French furniture specialists dedicate that kind of flair to their stands in Paris and Basel but Litvak personally raises the bar for the SOFA Fairs and at same time matches the extraordinary Surreal artistry of Bubacco,” says Mark Lyman, SOFA Fairs founder and director. At only age 15, Bubacco was awarded an artisan’s license and a scant few years later he was making history with his new interpretations of the “lume” glass technique by hand forming figures and incorporating them in blown and cast vessels. While mastering that historic “lume” glass technique, Bubacco draws imagery and forms from Greek, Roman and Byzantine art as well as medieval and renaissance theater and La Commedia dell’Arte in treating classic themes of love and destruction, birth and death, and heaven and hell. His work has been lauded by museum curators and collectors internationally. Lately, slews of interior designers have been ordering up unique chandeliers while collectors have been snatching up maquettes and drawings as well.

WENDELL CASTLE AT BARRY FRIEDMAN LTD.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
Dynamo designer Wendell Castle’s newest work, which bridges sculpture, art and functionality, won a slew of rave reviews as well as chalked up a bevy of museum sales in just days. “The fact that major museums like the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City and the Brooklyn Museum already snapped up Castle’s newest masterpieces in fiberglass, stack laminated wood and metal, some of which are at SOFA CHICAGO, demonstrates the powerful allure of Wendell’s work as well as the entire field of design, which SOFA has played a pivotal role in pioneering,” says Mark Lyman, founder and director of the SOFA Fairs. “Going back over a decade, Wendell and his extraordinary creations have been a mainstay of our SOFA CHICAGO; but today collectors and enthusiasts for his work are part of a far larger, far finer art world,” he says.

SOFA CHICAGO 2008 - GENERAL RELEASE:
15TH ANNUAL SCULPTURE OBJECTS & FUNCTIONAL ART FAIR RETURNS TO NAVY PIER, NOV. 7 - 9
OPENING NIGHT PREVIEW: NOV. 6
PDF MS Word

CHICAGO – Celebrating its 15th anniversary, SOFA CHICAGO 2008, the critically acclaimed Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair returns to Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, November 7–9, to present work from 100 international galleries and dealers. Hot on the heels of its successful 11th New York show, the 15th Chicago fair also features special exhibits by internationally renowned art museums, arts organizations and artists as well as an extensive lecture series, both included in the admission price.

“With important international galleries showcasing the latest work by established artists like Lino Tagliapietra, Dale Chihuly, Ruth Duckworth and Lenore Tawney, as well as emerging artists, leading museum curators and art advisors, along with both seasoned and novice collectors, see this global event as the pivotal fair for both cutting-edge contemporary work as well as historic material,” said Mark Lyman, founder/director of SOFA CHICAGO and SOFA NEW YORK. “More than ever, that sophisticated art community considers SOFA a vibrant and integral part of Chicago’s respected heritage of contemporary decorative arts and design.”

According to Lyman, SOFA boasts an unrivalled educational component of specially curated on-site exhibitions and lectures so that both long time and novice collectors can appreciate, understand and value the new and historical artistry showcased. He cites the presence of more than 400 artists on the fair floor adding yet another dimension to the collecting experience, such as William Hunter, whose work is now touring the country in a museum retrospective, and Karen LaMonte, who also has achieved numerous museum placements.
