Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art
756 North Milwaukee Avenue
Chicago IL

“Intuitive and outsider art” is created by artists who are motivated by their unique personal visions and demonstrate little or no influence from the mainstream art world.  Intuit was founded in 1991 to promote public awareness, understanding and appreciation of self-taught (intuitive) and outsider art. It is the only nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated solely to the presentation of self-taught and outsider art. The museum’s mission is grounded in the ethos that the instinct to create is universal, and the arts must embrace, celebrate and be accessible to all, regardless of education level or socioeconomic status. Intuit engages a wide range of audiences through exhibitions, performances, workshops, films, educational programming and printed as well as digital publications. Although art museum attendance nationally attracts only a 9% minority audience, Intuit’s audience is 18% ethnic minorities and growing. The museum’s exhibitions, collection and archival resources are world renowned, and its teacher and student educational programs have won numerous awards.  Each year the museum’s exhibitions, events, programs, website and social media reach an audience of more than 80,000 art enthusiasts, teachers and students. Currently, Intuit has more than 400 national and international members, many of whom provide support through loans and contributions of outsider art works.
