“My studio is situated in the mountains of western NC. I regularly walk through the woods and observe the changes in color, shape, and patterns of the plants.  My early work tended to be minimal, with a focus on only including what was essential.  I’m using this minimalist lens as I approach my current work.  It seems that the plants have consumed my “artist eye” and have become a metaphor for my human existence.  In them I see a daily effort put forth to survive, sometimes in harsh environments, until the realization of a mature plant bearing fruit or flower”. – Michael Sherrill

Several hightly-visible comprehensive collections gifted to museum seem to have set a norm for collection but there are shifts afoot in how collectors motivate and conceptualize their acquisitions. Beyond comprehensive and single-artist collecting, this panel will discuss various collecting strategies.  William V. Glass artist Ben Young discusses the life experiences which have influenced his work – pieces created from layers of sheet glass to resemble cross-sections of moving water. Ranging from his upbringing in a small beach town on the coast of New Zealand, which inspired his love of the ocean, to his training as a boat builder which has informed his technical practice.  A clip from the documentary film "My Name is Ben Young" will also be shown.

The Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design (SOFA) Fair in Chicago is the premier gallery-presented art fair dedicated to three-dimensional art and design. On par with Art Basel and TEFAF Maastricht, SOFA is produced by Urban Expositions.
