SPOTLIGHT FIBER ART
SOFA CHICAGO 2007, the 14th annual international exposition of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art, returns to Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, Nov. 2–4 to present masterworks bridging design and fine art from 100 international galleries and dealers and 18 countries. SOFA CHICAGO’s Lecture Series features internationally renowned curators, scholars and artists in 31 presentations, and is widely considered the largest and most distinctive forum at an art fair dedicated to exploring both the works on display and worldwide trends in today’s art scene. Seven special exhibits from around the world are also complimentary with SOFA admission.
Lecture Series of special interest to fiber art cognoscenti include A Fresh Look at Fiber, Part 1 and 2, two panels presented by Friends of Fiber Art International, featuring renowned artists Lesley Richmond, Polly Jacobs Giachinna, Jane Kenyon, Regina Benson, Cindy Hickok, Nancy Koenigsberg, Laurie Swim, Susan Etcoff Fraerman, Hillary Steele, Polly Adams Sutton and Kathy Weaver.
Kyoto’s internationally renowned artist and educator, Fukumoto Shigeki, presents SOME: A Japanese Perspective on Contemporary Dyed Works of Art, on the unique evolution of resist dyed textile art (some) in contemporary Japan and its 20th century ascent into the avant garde. While Japan is internationally recognized as the mecca for resist dyed textiles of varying techniques, most of those famous traditions were historically associated with fine kimono unitl the late 20th century, when artists began to explore textile dyeing in the production of works of art. Fukumoto is one of Japan’s leading contemporary artists and authorities in the broader field of some, various processes of total color saturation of textile with resist images.
In A Surface Designer’s Life, Jason Pollen gives a colorful personal history chronicling his 30 year partnership with the Surface Design Association and its glorious ascent, presented by the Surface Design Association.
