As
an artist Bernstein often seeks confrontation to create beauty.
His glass forms are created primarily through a subtractive method
- carving, grinding and polishing hardened glass, techniques similar
to those of a stone sculptor. He studies his raw forms, seeking
clues as to their potential for expression.
The
optical effects that he creates in his polished forms are not
the final message, rather a seductive element that leads the viewer
into a deeper realm. His carved forms, many being full lead crystal,
which is considered the most pristine form of glass, are often
corroded with spewed metal shards. Through this juxtaposition
of opposites, Alex not only articulates and enhances the precisely
cut, hard-edged, sometimes jagged, edges of crystal. |
