SOFA CHICAGO announces six of the top design universities in the country have been chosen to design unique installations for visitors to “connect” on the SOFA CHICAGO show floor at the annual CONNECT student design competition. Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, IL), Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY), Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) University of California – Davis (Davis, CA), University of Cincinnati | College of Design, Architecture and Art (Cincinnati, OH), and University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana, IL), have been chosen to participate in the 2016 edition of CONNECT.

“We are thrilled with these six prestigious universities that have been chosen to participate in CONNECT this year,” said Donna Davies, Vice President, Art Group, Urban Expositions. “These six design environments are engaging and we have been proud to see CONNECT develop into an exciting element of our annual fair that our collectors and patrons are eager to see. We are particularly delighted to see these installations come to life from their conceptual proposals to their built out spaces on the show floor. It is a competitive process to be chosen as one of the universities to participate in CONNECT, and really allows students to become as creative as possible.”

Now in its fourth year, CONNECT highlights innovative design programs at universities throughout the country. Students, under the supervision of university faculty, have the opportunity to design environments that incorporate seating and lighting installations, with the intention of offering an intimate area on the show floor where attendees can sit, relax and CONNECT. Exhibits will be located throughout the show floor, offering the international audience that attends SOFA CHICAGO an opportunity to experience the innovation and creativity of future designers.

The winning installation will be chosen by a jury of design professionals before the SOFA CHICAGO Opening Preview and will be awarded $3000 by Chubb Personal Risk Services, which is a returning sponsor of the fair for the twelfth consecutive year.

All students from each participating CONNECT school will have the opportunity to submit a proposal for a unique design to be created in glass by The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG). Three designs will be chosen, with the top design selected by CMOG to be created onsite at The Corning Museum of Glass’s Hot Glass Roadshow stage during SOFA CHICAGO. The winning student designers will join CMOG’s expert glassmakers during the fair to experience the glass blowing process first-hand.  The three top designs created will be showcased on the show floor.

Special thanks to Chubb Personal Risk Services and the Corning Museum of Glass for their generous support of CONNECT.
